You have a beautiful website that attracts customers. A website that works for you. However, you will also have to keep working on your website yourself. You will not only have to keep the content up-to-date. Maintaining a WordPress website means that the back-end of the website must also be kept up-to-date. When a website is not up-to-date, it is more vulnerable to hackers, for example, and it may be that certain things no longer work.
Maintaining a WordPress website
In this blog you can read how to keep a WordPress website up-to-date. I work mainly with WordPress, the most widely used content management system (CMS) and suitable for creating many different types of websites. The Woordprikkels website was also created with WordPress.
3 Things to Keep Up to Date
At the back end of a WordPress website there are 3 different things that need to be kept up to date:
- WordPress itself. WordPress regularly how to build telemarketing data adds new functionalities. And just like plugins and themes, security updates may be needed. These latter types of updates are often performed automatically.
- Plugins : functionalities added to a website.
- Theme : the design chosen for the website.
Automatic updates
Nowadays, you can set up WordPress to automatically update plugins. I advise against this. The best practice is to perform updates one by one and to test after each update whether the website still works properly. If an update causes a problem on your website, you will immediately know which update caused this problem.
Of course, you first made a backup of the creating a lush garden in limited spaces website that is stored outside the website. That way, if there are any problems, you can easily restore the website to this saved version. The free version of the UpdraftPlus plugin has saved me a few times!
And if a plugin gives a problem, you can report it to the plugin publisher. This way they can fix the error.
Keeping up to date for search engines
Keeping your website content up to date and regularly posting new content on your website can have a positive effect on your ranking in search engines like Google. Of course, it is also important to have the content up to date for your customers; a page with rates for 2018, for example, does not exude much confidence in 2021.
Tip: Do all your links still work? Internal aob directory and external links are important. Not only do they make it easier to find information on your website, they also help search engines understand what the website is about. This can help with your score in those search engines. But then those links have to be relevant and work. There is a handy plugin for the latter: Broken Link Checker . This plugin regularly checks whether the links on your website still work. If a link no longer works, you will receive a message.
Do it yourself or outsource?
You can easily maintain a WordPress website yourself. Especially when you ensure that you always have access to a current backup. But you can also have this done by a web designer or virtual assistant. For example, I have a number of clients, including Marrit from this website, who have taken out a maintenance subscription with me.
